How CBT Can Help

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, usually called CBT, is a structured psychological approach that examines how thoughts, emotions, physical sensations and behaviour influence one another.

What CBT is

CBT focuses on difficulties in the present while recognising that earlier experiences can shape current beliefs and coping patterns. It aims to help you understand what keeps a problem going and test more helpful ways of responding. It is collaborative and should be adapted to the person rather than applied as a rigid formula.

How the cycle works

A situation can trigger an interpretation, which influences emotion, bodily sensations and behaviour. Avoidance may bring short-term relief, for example, while strengthening anxiety over time. CBT helps identify these cycles and find realistic points where change is possible.

What sessions involve

Sessions usually include agreeing priorities, exploring recent examples, identifying patterns, learning relevant skills and reviewing what happens when a strategy is tried between appointments. The therapist does not simply tell you to think positively. The work is about developing balanced interpretations and behaviour that fits the evidence and your goals.

Difficulties CBT may support

CBT is used in work with a range of problems, although suitability depends on the individual.

  • Anxiety and persistent worry
  • Low mood and depression
  • Panic and avoidance
  • Stress and workplace pressure
  • Low confidence and self-criticism
  • Adjustment to difficult life events

Frequently asked questions

CBT can be short term or integrated into longer work. It sometimes includes written notes or between-session practice, but these should have a clear purpose and be agreed collaboratively. Progress is not always linear. If a technique is unhelpful, that is information to discuss rather than evidence that you have failed.
