Preparing for Your First Session
You do not need to arrive with everything worked out. A small amount of practical preparation can help you feel more settled and protect the privacy of the conversation.
Choose a private space
Use a room where you can speak freely and are unlikely to be interrupted. Tell other people in the home that you need privacy without sharing details you would rather keep confidential. If home is not suitable, discuss alternatives with DCCS before the appointment.
Check your connection and device
Test your internet connection, camera, microphone and speakers in advance. Position the device securely at eye level and keep its charger nearby. Join the private Zoom link a few minutes early so a technical problem does not use up session time.
Use headphones where helpful
Headphones can reduce the chance of being overheard and often improve sound quality. They are useful but should not create a false sense of privacy if other people can still hear you speaking.
Understand confidentiality
Counselling is confidential within clearly explained professional and legal limits. Before beginning, read the information provided about privacy, record keeping, safeguarding and circumstances in which information may need to be shared.
Keep essential information available
DCCS may need your current physical location and an emergency contact, particularly for online sessions. International clients should know the emergency services relevant to the location from which they are attending.
Make the most of the appointment
Consider what feels most important to discuss and what you would like to be different. Notes can help, but they are optional. Be honest if you are uncertain, uncomfortable or unsure where to start. The first session is also your opportunity to assess whether the approach feels appropriate for you.
- Allow enough time so you are not rushing
- Silence non-essential notifications
- Avoid alcohol or non-prescribed substances before the session
- Plan a calm transition back into your day
